In 2006 the Australian Jockey Club invested in master planning which included market research, community needs analysis, concept designs, commercial feasibility, heritage positioning and, crucially, human, equine and vehicle traffic management. As part of this plan, the studio was engaged to design a signage system that would address a multitude of events and functions as well as direct many types of users around a vast racecourse site. The studio designed a system that would integrate both the original buildings and the new modern minimalist structures as well as adopting a pre-existing ‘brand’ guide. The solution was a system of freestanding totems that serve many necessary functions, directing race goers and non-racing visitors around the site.
